Elopement weddings is another term for weddings where a couple simply run off and get married without telling family or friends about their plans. The term is used colloquially today but used to mean that couples would flee to marry because they wished to avoid objections from parents, or religious obligations. Nowadays elopement is more a choice of the couple where the wish is to have a intimate wedding day, shared between them both or where funds for a big celebration are limited. For some couples with big families, eloping allows them to focus limited resources on only the most important family members rather than a big wedding with 100 guests that might run up large amounts of debt.
